Brooks,
You have asked me why I am writing to you if I am not trying to dissuade
you from your beliefs. I think that I must really be worse at communicating
than I thought. It seems to me that from the very first I have questioned
only the purpose of your site as you have stated it. You have claimed that
you are trying to help Christians be saved from "untold guilt and
suffering". Such a view would involve love and compassion toward these poor
lost people. I have not found either of these on your site.
I have challenged you on this issue over and over with no admission on your
part that indeed your goal is something else. I am not saying that you
don't have the right to have a website that tries to dispute the claims of
Christianity. I am not claiming that you need to be respectful to
Christians in your discourse. What I am saying is that your approach is
contradictory to one of helping poor lost souls.
You said it best in your last email, "However, the point of having a
discussion with you would be to demonstrate to others the absurdity of your
beliefs." Proving my beliefs absurd is in no way indicative of somebody who
cares about me. You simply wish to prove that you can show the Christian
faith to be absurd.
If your motivation was to care for fellow human beings as you claim, you
would seek those who are open to the better life you have found. You would
focus on why the atheistic life provides the answers to life's questions
and not why the Christian life is absurd. It stands to reason that the
superiority of the atheistic lifestyle would win the day on its own merits.
Think about it, once you have successfully debunked the Christian God,
there is a whole host of others waiting for you. Even the Christian whose
beliefs are successfully challenged has nothing to turn to when you are
done with them. You haven't offered anything better, just the knowledge
that what they are believing is foolishness.
If you really think that you have discovered the truth, why spend your time
on all the falsehoods? Banks don't teach tellers about counterfeit money.
Instead they teach them how to recognize the real thing. Anything that does
not pass for the real thing is false. Your reverse approach dramatically
reduces the number of people who are receiving your truths.
It is clear to me that the only thing you want with me is to use me in your
campaign.
Matt

Subject: one more thing-correction
Matt,
YOU: "If you believe that my beliefs would prove to be worthless, you
must know by now that your arguments could not sway me anymore than mine
could sway you."
If you feel this way, then why bother e-mailing me? If you know you will
not change my mind and I will not change yours, why do you persist in
contacting me? I think is is because you don't like what I have to say, and
you want some way expressing your anger at what I say.
I am fairly certain that nothing I would say would ever change your mind.
However, the point of having a discussion with you would be to demonstrate
to others the absurdity of your beliefs.
Cheers,
Brooks
